Terrapins Survive a Scare, Gators Win Fifth Straight in D4 South Action

The Terrapins held off a determined challenge from the Buckeyes, the Gators extended their winning streak to five games, and the Seawolves and Utes used late rallies to earn victories in D4 South softball action Oct. 22 at Faraget Field.

The results kept the Terrapins atop the standings at 10–1, one game ahead of the Gators at 9–2. The Rams and Hurricanes, both 7–4 after their second consecutive losses, now trail the league leader by three games.

The closest finish belonged to the Terrapins, who defeated the Buckeyes, 18–16, after watching an early advantage disappear. Five-run innings in the first and third helped the Terrapins build a 10–3 lead, but the Buckeyes steadily worked their way back. A six-run fourth tied the game at 11–11, and both teams scored twice in the fifth to leave the outcome unsettled.

The Terrapins regained control with five runs in the sixth. Bases-loaded walks to Robert Schrader and John Weaver brought home two runs before Jeff Drake delivered a bases-clearing single for an 18–13 lead.

The Buckeyes made one more push in the seventh. David Hurnevich, Mark Chase and James Feehan singled, and Marty Dominique followed with a three-run double to cut the deficit to two. A single by Terry Sullivan kept the rally alive before the Terrapins recorded the final out.

Jeff Drake led the winners with a 4-for-4 performance, two triples, a double and six RBIs. John Weaver went 3-for-3 with a walk, four runs scored and three RBIs, while John Calise added three hits and three RBIs. Stephen Hart contributed three hits, including a two-run triple, and Timothy Kacprowicz also collected three hits.

The Buckeyes outhit the Terrapins, 26–23. Graham Peers went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, Marty Dominique drove in three, and David Hurnevich homered among his three hits. The loss ended the Buckeyes’ two-game winning streak and left them at 5–6.

The Gators kept pace with the league leader by defeating the Rams, 21–9. After falling behind 1–0 in the first, the Gators scored five runs in both the second and third innings to establish a 10–1 advantage.

Chuck Hasenauer’s two-run homer helped spark the second-inning rally, while a two-run double by Charles Gilpin highlighted the third. The Rams rallied for five runs in the fifth, including Thomas Janeka’s two-run triple and Philip Sabo’s two-run homer, to narrow the margin to 12–6. The Gators answered with four runs in the sixth and five in the seventh, pulling away behind Gary Maurer’s two-run triple in the final inning.

Ken Wheeler went 4-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Wes Anthony finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Chuck Hasenauer collected three hits, three runs and three RBIs. Gary Maurer added three hits and scored three times, and Charles Gilpin contributed two doubles. All 11 Gators hitters drove in at least one run.

For the Rams, Philip Sabo went 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBIs. Michael Goldstein drove in three runs on three hits, Terry Owens added three hits, and Thomas Janeka finished with a double, a triple and two RBIs.

The Seawolves ended a four-game losing streak with a 26–17 victory over the Hurricanes, scoring 12 runs over the final two innings to turn a late deficit into a convincing win.

The teams traded rallies throughout the opening five innings. The Seawolves scored five in the first, but the Hurricanes answered with four in the bottom half and five in the second to move ahead 9–5. Jon Lurie’s third-inning grand slam tied the game before the Hurricanes regained the lead.

A five-run fourth put the Seawolves back in front, 14–11, only for the Hurricanes to answer with five runs in the fifth. Timothy Schultz’s two-run triple helped fuel that rally, which gave the Hurricanes a 16–14 advantage.

The Seawolves responded decisively. Jon Lurie’s two-run double and Mike Hamel’s RBI triple helped produce five runs in the sixth. Seven more in the seventh, including two-run hits by Rob Cohen and James Culhane, put the game beyond reach.

James Culhane went 5-for-5 with five runs scored and five RBIs. Jon Lurie finished with four hits, two doubles, a grand slam and seven RBIs. Rob Cohen added four hits, two doubles, four runs and three RBIs, while Ricky Stepp and Mike Hamel also collected four hits apiece. Timothy Decker went 3-for-3 and scored three times.

The Hurricanes totaled 27 hits, led by perfect 4-for-4 performances from Dan Sweet and Bill Dorner. Bill Dorner had a double and a triple, David Knott hit two triples, and Roy Gronau and William Grove each homered. The victory moved the Seawolves to 4–7.

The Utes earned their second win of the season by defeating the Nittany Lions, 28–20, behind a 36-hit attack and a standout day from Pete Viteritti.

The Utes led 12–2 midway through the fourth, but the Nittany Lions fought back with six runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. That sustained response erased the deficit and left the teams tied at 20–20 entering the seventh.

The Utes then produced the deciding eight-run rally. Joseph Monaco and John Behnfeldt delivered RBI singles, Joe Damato added a two-run single, and Pete Viteritti followed with a two-run triple. RBI hits from Arty Hines and Kelly Martinez completed the scoring before the Utes held the Nittany Lions scoreless in the bottom half.

Pete Viteritti finished 5-for-6 with two doubles, a triple and 10 RBIs. Arty Hines went 6-for-6 with a triple and five RBIs. John Behnfeldt contributed three hits, two doubles, five runs and four RBIs, while Joe Damato went 4-for-4 with five runs and three RBIs. Jesse McNurlen also finished 4-for-4, drawing two walks and scoring four times.

For the Nittany Lions, Jim Felton collected three hits and four RBIs, and Tom Fay went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Lee Smith, Rich Patch and Henry Dolecki each added three hits, while Kevin May’s two-run triple helped fuel the fourth-inning comeback.

The Utes and Nittany Lions now share 2–9 records, eight games behind first. Above them, the Seawolves moved ahead of the idle Tar Heels, who remain 3–7. The Buckeyes hold fifth at 5–6, while the Terrapins’ third straight victory and the Gators’ fifth straight win have opened a two-game gap between second place and the Rams and Hurricanes.
